the second wave speaks

You're only young once, but you can be immature forever.
- Germaine Greer.

We've begun to raise daughters more like sons... but few have the courage to raise our sons more like our daughters.

A woman reading Playboy feels a little like a Jew reading a Nazi manual.
- Gloria Steinem

Idealists foolish enough to throw caution to the winds have advanced mankind and have enriched the world.

Wouldn't you say that quote about Playboy and the Nazi's was a little distasteful?

Whatever Playboy contains, I really don't think it ought to be compared to a genocide.

@ sridhar: i know.. conjurs up upsetting violent images doesnt it.

thats the point. playboy is the propaganda for a concept thats as bloody and barbaric as that of racial supremacy.

please look at rwanda - look at the war waged against womens bodies and spirit particularly during the genocide.

doesnt your blood boil for that too? is it any less violent or a whit less savage?

I'd typed out a long reply justifying the fact that the quote was distasteful when I realised that what I was doing was exactly what had irritated me about the quote:

Using a human tragedy to reinforce an argument.

So I'm not going to argue with you.

Umm....I hadn't really voiced my opinions on pornography and playboy. I just found the reference to the holocaust objectionable and so I'd appreciate it if you didn't say "Carrying on from where Sridhar left off". The fact that it was Playboy and porn that was talked about in the quote makes no particular difference to me and I still think it's a tasteless way of trying to make a point.

Sadly, I'm going to have to bail out of this thread for the following reasons:

1. This thread seems to have wandered off into a discussion on prostitution and porn. I'm not really going to make any major efforts to improve the lives of sex-workers or underprivileged women and so I don't really have a moral right to comment on them or their actions.
2. A week back I was thinking about this quote and driving along C.M.H road. I was so caught up in the moral issues that I didn't notice a Tata Sumo crossing the road.
3. I don't like being hit by large, diesel-powered vehicles.
